As you consider a move into an Independent Living community, it’s helpful to have an understanding of a community’s expectations. Typically, Independent Living residents are expected to manage their day-to-day life without assistance.
Services that Support Your Independence
Independent Living residents typically receive the following, as part of their monthly service fee:

- Dining
A meal plan that offers residents options so they aren’t solely responsible for making all of their meals.
- Housekeeping and Maintenance
Scheduled services that maintain the interior and exterior of your residence so residents can enjoy maintenance-free living.
- Transporation
Communities can offer a range of transportation options from campus shuttles, to shared services, or even access to private transportation options.
- Concierge Services
Navigating a new community can be overwhelming. Concierge services help residents navigate and access community resources that are available as part of their monthly service fee.
- Security
Communities can provide in-house security departments to support their residents, while some communities hire a 3rd party vendor to provide campus security.
The above services are designed to make independent living easier for residents, not to replace the skills necessary for managing their daily activities. As a resident, you can embrace maintenance-free living with the freedom to focus on what matters most, all while taking charge of essential tasks like mobility, staying connected, managing daily responsibilities, and maintaining personal care.
Navigating Your Daily Responsibilities
To live your best life in an Independent Living community, you should be able to:
- Move Safely
Navigate to dining areas, community events, and other campus spaces independently, with or without the use of mobility devices, without requiring personal assistance.
- Stay Connected and Informed
Manage your communications, keep up with mail, and stay updated on community events. As technology becomes more engrained in communities, it is important that you are able to access information via a smartphone, tablet, or computer.
- Manage Tasks
Place dining orders, make reservations for events, and coordinate transportation on your own.
- Request Home Maintenance
Depending on the community, there may be a process to request repairs to ensure your home continues to run safely and smoothly.
- Maintain Personal Hygiene
Manage personal grooming and hygiene needs, such as bathing, dressing, and hair care, to ensure your comfort and well-being.
Shared Services vs. Full Support
Our shared services are here to assist you when needed. However, relying on them daily is not a sustainable or safe option for anyone living independently. For those who require more frequent support, Assisted Living or higher levels of care are available within our continuum of care.
