The Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary (SNJM) announce a change for Mary’s Woods, their official ministry as a non-profit Continuing Care Retirement Community that they founded in 2001.
The Board and sisters are currently working on the process of transitioning governance of the non-profit organization from the SNJM Provincial Leadership to the Mary’s Woods Board of Directors. This strategic decision ensures that Mary’s Woods remains true to its mission while preparing for the future.
A Community Founded on Core Values
Mary’s Woods was created as both a ministry of the SNJM community and a home for retired sisters. Over the past two decades, it has grown into a vibrant community where residents live life fully, celebrate dignity, and care for one another. The transition in governance reflects the community’s maturity and the solid foundation built since its inception.
Understanding the Governance Transition
Mary’s Woods has always operated with a two-tiered governance structure
- Member Tier: Comprised of SNJM Sisters, ensuring the mission and values remain central.
- Board of Directors: A group of community professionals responsible for overseeing governance and the Chief Executive Officer who is accountable for successfully leading and stewarding operations and an array of services.
The decision to transfer full governance to the Board is a proactive step to ensure continuity of the mission, while the Sisters are still an active presence at Mary’s Woods.
Reasons Behind the Decision
The SNJM leadership cites several reasons for this transition:
Proactive Planning
The Sisters are securing the future stability of Mary’s Woods by transitioning governance now, allowing them to guide the process.
Established Systems
After 22 years, strong systems and structures are in place at Mary’s Woods, enabling the Board and leadership to fully embody the mission and values.
Looking Ahead
Recognizing the reality that fewer Sisters will be available to serve in governance roles, this transition ensures that the community continues to thrive.
Continuity in Community Life
Despite this governance change, the presence and influence of the Sisters will remain strong:
- Sisters will continue to serve on the Board of Directors.
- They will remain residents of Mary’s Woods and active participants in community life.
- Spiritual care will continue to be integrated in to the life of Mary’s Woods.
- Mass and prayer services will continue to be offered in the chapel.
A Future Grounded in Mission
This transition reflects the Sisters’ confidence in the Board’s ability to uphold and advance the Mission of Mary’s Woods. While changes may come, the core values established by the Sisters will remain at the heart of the community, guiding its evolution to meet the needs of residents and staff. The Board is committed to maintaining the same integrity and spirit of service that have long defined Mary’s Woods.
