Mary’s Woods and Youth Villages join forces to give young people the gift of music

The Mary’s Woods/Robinswoods Ukulele project has hit a high note! Beginning in June, Mary’s Woods volunteers and Robinswoods staff at Youth Villages will collaborate on a funfilled music program aimed at putting joy into the hearts of the young people living next door.

The new program includes a workshop where the kids build their own ukulele, and a series of music classes where they learn to play the instrument. “By the end of the week-long program we hope the kids take the gift of music for life as they prepare to embrace their new families and leave our friendly community behind,” said Marshall Watkins, who along with his wife Linda, envisioned the project.

Mary’s Woods recently took advantage of a business closing in Lake Oswego and purchased a dozen ukuleles (see photograph above) for its “lending library” so the kids can learn to play while they build.

Robinswood is a group home for children in Oregon’s foster care system; it’s operated by the nonprofits New Avenues for Youth and Youth Villages, and overseen by the Oregon Department of Human Services and Oregon Health Authority.
