Wondering why employees are wearing black shirts on Fridays? It’s not a new casual dress policy, rather a sign the employee is a member of an all-volunteer Mary’s Woods team focused on bringing about a greater good to our community—another reminder of the spirit of altruism on campus.

The Employee Giving Campaign (EGC) was born out of a desire to create meaningful opportunities for MW staff members to work together while giving back to the broader community. The campaign is led by Carrie Meldgaard in Home Care Services, Ryan Dumbauld in Dining Services, and Jessica Harvey in Resident Services.

“The program is designed to utilize the talents of our staff and offer multiple ways to give,” said Jessica. “Staff members can volunteer to work at any specific event we have planned, donate items for our various drives, or donate money towards the Employee Giving Campaign Fund.”

Money from this EGC fund will supplement various MW endeavors, such as purchasing additional backpacks for the school supply drive. Funds will also be used to provide additional support for employees seeking grants to fund their outside volunteer opportunities.

“This is entirely employee driven,” said Lisa Wiebe, MW Development Liaison. “It speaks volumes to the caliber of people Mary’s Woods hires “

By creating this program, the EGC team plans to foster employee engagement and excitement toward spreading our mission and values beyond the Mary’s Woods campus, and build a culture where everyone is an ambassador for philanthropy.

Examples of planned events include: a blood drive with the Red Cross for both employees and residents; volunteer at the Oregon Food Bank; and a school supply drive/plant sale to help NW Housing Alternatives.

Keep an eye out for those black Employee Giving T-Shirts! You will see them on Fridays or at events where employees are volunteering.
