A Shining Example of Our Mission

A Shining Example of Our Mission

A message from Mary’s Woods CEO Marvin Kaiser

April 4, 2016
As a caring community, our mission statement clearly expresses that Mary’s Woods “respond to the Gospel’s vision of full development for every individual at each life stage.” We take this to heart by offering an array of programs and services aimed at enriching the physical, emotional and spiritual well-being of our residents.

Now, through a special partnership with the Oregon Symphony, a groundbreaking music therapy program called MusicNOW has come to our campus.

The program connects Oregon Symphony musicians, Marylhurst University music therapy interns, the Alzheimer’s Association of Oregon, the Earthtones Music Therapy Services, and Mary’s Woods in a unique partnership aimed at providing social engagement to residents with memory loss, dementia, and other neurological disorders through musical experiences.

We couldn’t be more excited about the results thus far. At the most recent sessions, residents in Caritas House were handed a baton while a visiting musician played an instrument. The effects of the music were stunning: many of our residents actually began to conduct the tempo of the song as though leading an orchestra.

Still other residents, those who sat in nearby chairs to listen, started clapping to the rhythm and some, including those with the deepest loss of time or place, moved their feet to the music. There wasn’t a dry eye in sight. It was such a moving experience for all who were present that day.

MusicNOW falls in line with our mission and we are very proud to be part of the pilot program. By touching memory and emotion, this program promises to prolong life and enhance healthy aging for all who might need special attention someday.

Thank you,

Marvin Kaiser
