Congratulations go out to Mary’s Woods writers Trish Gardner, a poet, and Pamela Still, a short-story author, for receiving writing awards from Leading Age Oregon (LAO).

Trish Gardner was recognized in the poetry category. Her lovely poem titled, One, is a reflection of the spirit of God, the universe, and life coming through her heart. Trish was selected to read her poem at this year’s Leading Age Creative Writing and Poetry Contest Celebration Luncheon.

Trish has been writing poetry since she was 12-years-old. Her poetic influences include the late Ogden Nash, an American poet well-known for his humorous poetry. Her poem is currently posted on the Mary’s Woods Residents/Community bulletin board next to the sign-up sheets.

Pamela Still was honored for her short story titled, Cloudstreams, a masterful work which stimulates the imagination and draws the reader into the life cycles of coastal cloud formations. The story was inspired by a long, passing line of cloud along the Oregon Coast.

“The stream of rushing cloud seemed so endless,” she said, recalling the moment she looked out her kitchen’s patio doors. “It generated a lot of oohs and ahhs in my head, so I grabbed pen and paper and, wanting not to look away and miss anything, began jotting just words and phrases to capture the mood and experience.”

Pamela, who has received numerous writing awards, notes there has never been a time in her life when she did not enjoy the opportunity to create with words. “The pleasure of writing lies partly in the challenge of coming up with ways to convey an event or idea,” she added. “And not only in a way that grabs a reader’s interest, but in touching another’s mind and heart.”

The annual LAO Creative Writing contest began in 1993. Member residents submit short stories and poems that are read and scored by judges in each category who are published writers and poets.

Other talented Mary’s Woods writers who participated in the 2015 LOA contest include short story writers Katherine Millard and Hugh O’Reilly, and poet Sr. Mary J. Steinkamp.

Trish and Pamela’s award-winning prose have been published in the LAO digital periodical Reflections: A Collection of Writing and Poetry by Oregon’s Elders. Read: www.oashs.org/resident-programs
