Mary’s Woods Announces Civil Rights leader and 2013 Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient C.T. Vivian to speak at MLK Celebration

Dr. VivianDistinguished minister, author, and organizer Dr. C.T. Vivian, a close friend and lieutenant of the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. during the American Civil Rights era, will be the speaker at this year’s Dr. King Celebration. He will share his lifetime experience on the inner circle of the Civil Rights Movement.

The second annual MLK event is on Saturday, January 16, at 2pm in the Chapel of the Holy Names. Portland’s Northwest Freedom Singers, a choral group comprised of the city’s finest voices, will accompany Dr. Vivian with a performance of inspirational songs and gospel hymns.

After speaking, Dr. Vivian will participate in a Q&A session with those in attendance. A reception will follow with an opportunity to meet Dr. Vivian.

“We are honored,” said Marvin Kaiser, Mary’s Woods CEO, “to have renowned civil rights leader Dr. Vivian on our campus, and in our community, to remember the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. and to share his experience and hope for our nation toward becoming a more just and equitable society.”

In November 2013, Dr. Vivian was honored for his vision and leadership in the fight for justice when he was awarded the Nation’s highest civilian honor—The Presidential Medal of Freedom. He has participated in Freedom Rides and sit-ins across our country. He has provided civil rights counsel to Presidents Johnson, Carter, Reagan, Clinton, and Obama, and he continues to lecture on racial justice and democracy throughout the world.

The New School for Social Research named Dr. C.T. Vivian “… spiritual leader, apostle of social justice, strategist of the civil rights movement … For decades he has been in the vanguard of the struggle for racial equality in America”, as they presented him with one of his many honorary doctorates.

“It’s not very often that we get an opportunity to meet and engage living history,” said Daryl Dixon, president of the Mary’s Woods Diversity Committee. “Lots of people like to say that they marched with Dr. King, but Dr. Vivian not only marched with King, he was a part of the inner circle developing strategy with him.”

The event is free to the general public.
