A History of Caring
In October of 1859, twelve young Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary (SNJM) arrived on the banks of the Willamette River after a long voyage from Quebec, Canada. Driven by their faith and a passion for education and service to the communities in which they settled, they were the roots of a variety of institutions in Oregon. This includes St. Mary’s Academy, Marylhurst University and Mary’s Woods Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC).
Mary’s Woods CCRC is a 501(c)3 non-profit established by SNJM in 2001. Mary’s Woods was developed on the historic and scenic lands owned by SNJM where the Order traditionally provided housing and care for Sisters at its Provincial House.
In founding Mary’s Woods, SNJM envisioned a community that would provide a continuum of housing, health and educational services to both Sisters and laypersons in the community. Today, the 19-acre Mary’s Woods CCRC is the fulfillment of that vision, and the magnificently renovated 1910 Provincial House serves as a centerpiece of Mary’s Woods’ vibrant community, with a variety of restaurants, meeting and event spaces, classrooms, a fitness center with pool and the beautiful Mary’s Woods Chapel.
Fundamental to the formation of Mary’s Woods was SNJM’s need to continue providing healthcare for their elderly Sisters. The Mary’s Woods Bed Agreement was created at the time of the community’s founding in order to meet this need. In return for leasing a portion of the land to Mary’s Woods, the preservation of SNJM-owned land surrounding the community, the integration and remodeling of the historic Provincial House and other considerations, SNJM Sisters are provided healthcare services in up to 33 beds at Mary’s Woods’ Marie Rose Center.
Mary’s Woods continues to honor these agreements, which were both a condition of developing Mary’s Woods, and made the development financially possible. In addition to the considerations described in the Bed Agreement, Mary’s Woods residents enjoy access to SNJM facilities and land surrounding the community, use of the chapel and other meeting spaces, parking facilities, the wood-shop, land for garden boxes and the various services and classes offered by SNJM Sisters. The Sisters remain active as members of the Mary’s Woods community, whether as residents, volunteers or employees.
This exchange of services and financial considerations represents the spirit of Mary’s Woods’ founding. We are proud of what was accomplished with Mary’s Woods founding – combining authentic spiritual values and strong financial principles that have enabled Mary’s Woods to sustain itself, remain cost competitive and maintain an exceptionally robust occupancy rate – and most importantly, to become the vibrant community it is today.
Mary’s Woods submits annual disclosures to the State of Oregon that include details on the financial relationship between Mary’s Woods CCRC and SNJM. These documents are available to prospective and current tenants by request at the business office.
